NSEDC expects to see herring in the region in the next week or so, which will kick off our summer fishery season. The herring fishery is the first commercial fishery of the summer and NSEDC is looking to purchase 75 tons or 150,000 pounds of bait herring this year. NSEDC purchases herring at the Southern NSSP plant in Unalakleet, where the fish are bagged and frozen. The herring is then made available to commercial crab and halibut fishers to purchase at-cost as bait.
